- Aspiring bands invited to enter competition with once-in-a-lifetime prize
- Facebook users vote for their favourite performers to play live next month at 2011 MTV EMAs
- Winning band will be on the bill with world-famous stars Snow Patrol and Jason Derulo
Offenbach, 18th October 2011
Hyundai has launched a unique competition to find the outstanding amateur band that will play live in front of 20,000 fans at one of the biggest showbiz events of the year – the 2011 MTV EMAs. Up-and-coming bands can demonstrate their musical flair by uploading their videos to Hyundai’s 1+2 Band Contest Facebook page. The winning act, selected through a combination of public votes and expert assessment by an MTV judging panel, will perform at Belfast City Hall on 6th November – on the same stage as top international acts Snow Patrol and Jason Derulo.
Inspired by the 1+2 door layout on the new Hyundai Veloster sports coupe – the ‘Official Wheels’ of the 2011 MTV EMAs – the competition will see an aspiring band become the “+1” to the headlining professional acts at the iconic City Hall. The winning band will be treated just like the biggest stars: chaperoned throughout the weekend, styled and managed by experts, and of course given prime-time billing on stage.
As soon as a band has uploaded its video through the 1+2 Band Contest Facebook app, fans can place their votes. Rankings for all performances are shown in the app, so voters can see the most popular bands during the voting period, including checking who their friends have voted for.

The MTV jury is headed by Albert Schilcher, VP of Music & Music Marketing at MTV Networks International, who has been with MTV Networks for over 10 years and is responsible for all multi-territory music initiatives. His industry experience also includes an extensive background in music journalism, after which Schilcher served as A&R Manager at BMG Music Publishing.
The jury will review the top three bands in each country and choose a national winner. From the national winners, a pan-European top three will be selected and interviewed, before the ultimate winning band is declared and invited to Belfast for the gig of their lives.
Its 1+2 door configuration gives the Hyundai Veloster great coupe styling without any traditional coupe compromise on practicality, thanks to the neat integration of a rear passenger door.
Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe, commented: “All aspiring musicians want to play in front of a huge crowd, and it’s a great pleasure for Hyundai to give the best band the chance to take the stage before an audience of 20,000 people for a once-in-a-lifetime performance. We’re uniting music fans online through a voting process that empowers Facebook users to make their choice, so this unique competition will recognise the true popularity of the stand-out performers.
“Hyundai encourages all artists to take up the spirit of our new brand slogan – ‘New Thinking. New Possibilities.’ – and push themselves to new heights in their quest for a place at the 2011 MTV EMAs. Good luck to everyone taking part!” Allan Rushforth concluded.
The Facebook app is live until 23:59 CET on Sunday 23rd October 2011. The MTV EMAs will be held on Sunday 6th November 2011 at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
